When Adnan Barq picked up my Zoom call this summer, he was apologetic. He was walking through West Jerusalem and had lost track of time. “I rarely come here, but I needed to find a job,” Barq said. The 21-year old graduated this summer with his bachelors’ degree from Bethlehem University. “I was in a hotel asking if they need someone for reception. The receptionist was like, ‘You studied English literature and journalism and want to work as a receptionist?’” he said.
After our call, he’ll head back to East Jerusalem, to the Old City, to home. It feels like a military zone, he tells me, filled with surveillance. In the next week, he’ll make the short walk to Sheikh Jarrah to try to see a few friends and sit with the families who are protesting. But he’ll encounter a fence guarded by soldiers. They’ll turn him away, he said.
