Your Turn, August 2: Don’t get war weary and forget about Ukraine

Associated PressVladimir Putin is gambling that Russia will outlast any challenges to his war of attrition posed by his adversaries in the West. And there are. He believes that food shortages, inflation and high energy costs will dampen our fervor to the point that Congress will tire of spending billions to save Ukraine from Russian aggression.

Only time will tell whether Putin is right. There is no guarantee we will save our own democracy, which seems very fragile at the moment. But I will continue to fly our flag on Flag Day and July Fourth, and the Ukrainian on all other days.Re: “The report on Uvalde is a call to action,” Another View, July 24:

Republican former Texas Supreme Court Justice Eva Guzman’s guest column stated the Uvalde report was a “call to action.” She then goes on with vague references to policy change, examining “possibilities,” using logic not politics to guide work, etc. Never once did she address the one tangible thing that could slow or prevent mass murders: the proliferation of firearms and their easy availability to anyone with a grudge or anger issues.

We can put deadbolts on every door, we can train our overworked teachers to take on yet another job of protecting their students, we can place responsibility for failures on law enforcement and do so many other things that make us feel better but don’t do a thing to make us safer. Unless our leaders address the underlying truth about mass shootings, they will continue.Letter writer Tom Hoskings asked Republicans to answer three questions.
