Women in public office such as U.S. Rep. Mayra Flores shouldn’t be judged by their life choices or experiences. And yet readers see such judgment in a recent guest column that unfavorably compared U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez with Flores.Re: “Two Latinas, two visions of America,” Another View, July 14:
Nasser Hussain disparages U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez as he compares her with newly elected U.S. Rep. Mayra Flores. He only mentions one policy difference — abortion — but then criticizes AOC because she didn’t grow up poor enough, though her financial struggles were real, she hasn’t married, she doesn’t have children, she’s a “headline-grabber,” she’s not Catholic enough, and she’s not Latina enough.
I disagree with Flores’ policies, but I would never disparage her for her life course or choices. I am done with the good girl vs. bad girl trope, and I am past done with a man like Hussain who believes he has the right to weigh in on the personal decisions made by women.
A locked door would not have kept a determined gunman from causing harm. The punishment on the school principal and Uvalde school district chief of police is misplaced.I strongly second Gilbert Flores’ opinion. However, let’s go one step further. Every CPS bill has a place asking for donations to help those having problems paying their bills. I am fortunate enough to have enough income to cover my utility bills. How about every CPS executive pledge 5 percent of their salaries to this fund and allow independent auditors to confirm the donations?
