Readers praise former San Antonio mayor Phil Hardberger’s recent opinion piece about gun reform, wishing current elected officials would follow suit.In this moment, I can’t get a song out of my head. In 1979, Lucinda Williams recorded a traditional song with the refrain “Motherless children have a hard time when their mother’s dead.”, 75 percent of women who have an abortion are struggling to put food on the table and 60 percent of women already have children.
This was only made possible by Justice Neil Gorsuch filling what should have been Merrick Garland’s seat, and Amy Coney Barrett replacing Ruth Bader Ginsburg. There was a time when someone in high office was respected for the office they held. Respect is one of the values we are losing, along with our democracy.
These two opinion pieces illustrate a very different approach to addressing a most pressing issue. One is from a former elected official, Phil Hardberger, and one is from a current elected official, Tony Gonzales. Spoiler alert: I’m going with Hardberger.
