Members of the San Antonio Symphony protest for a fair contract. Reader says we should be funding our symphony.Re: “Big Oil isn’t in hurry to transform its moves on energy,” Business, Wednesday:
Columnist Chris Tomlinson argues that oil and gas companies ought to lead in developing technologies needed to reach net-zero emissions by 2050. But methane poisons Texans now. Collection of natural gas releases volatile organic compounds, potentially causing cancer, nervous system injury and birth defects. We need the EPA to swiftly strengthen and finalize its proposed rule to reduce methane emissions and pollutants.
Economists, scientists and climate advocates agree that a price on carbon is the best way to reduce emissions and spur technological development. TheI encourage Tomlinson and the rest of us to focus on this as our best approach to preserving the environment and growing our economy. While at the ballet, I received another leaflet from some of the San Antonio Symphony musicians.
We are the seventh-largest city in the country, and we should have more of a fine arts presence than we do. A full-size orchestra should be the absolute minimum in San Antonio. And what about community outreach? On top of all the reasons our community needs this symphony, we should address the issues of the musicians themselves. The proposal to cut so many full-time positions, benefits and salaries, and expect everybody to go on as usual is absolutely unfair and a little absurd.
