Prayers are needed for the people of Ukraine in this unprovoked war, writes Kathy Flinn, who sent this image.Re: “To avoid a humanitarian crisis, prepare now for war’s refugees,” Other Views, Sunday:
As columnist Catherine Rampell notes, now is the time for the U.S. to prepare to accommodate Ukrainian refugees escaping the war in their home country. We have been somewhat lax in the past in our response to humanitarian crises, and this is a good opportunity to show our support and care for those who want to leave Ukraine.
I see no way to reconcile support of a free and sovereign Ukraine with continued support for Trump and his backers — an impossible moral contortion being practiced by an alarming number of Texas Republicans that is reminiscent of Orwellian “doublethink.” Trump supporters forget that he tried to undermine NATO, going so far as to contemplate withdrawing from the treaty, even as they hear him praise Russian despot Putin as “genius” and “wonderful” for his violent and unprovoked invasion of a peaceful European democracy. They forget Jan. 6.
I pray for Ukraine and for the hypocrisy of Texans who claim that America, Ukraine and the world would have been safer for democracy and freedom under Donald Trump.
