A reader says people should thank President Joe Biden for nominating Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court.It is unfortunate the Supreme Court has become a political lightning rod. Even in 2001 when Bush v. Goreby a 5-4 vote, Americans settled back into their routines without much ado.
But all Americans, even those who harshly criticized him, should thank President Joe Biden for nominating a judge, Ketanji Brown Jackson, who will represent a group that has been absent from the court for quite a while: Protestants.Americans value freedom of expression, a civil right in our country — the First Amendment of the Constitution. Yet not all expression is legal. Shouting “Fire, fire!” in a crowded theater when there is no fire is illegal.
Germany legislated hate speech to be illegal after Hitler, who brought down a democracy with his hate, was defeated. Perhaps Americans should consider making hate speech illegal, banning the incitement to hatred, as well as insults that assault human dignity based on racial, national, religious or ethnic background. As evidenced in recent mass shootings, hate speech can lead to endangering persons of certain races and religious backgrounds.
