Mr Ellie was born in Ghana in a refugee camp during a time when his parents were fleeing from Sierra Leone's civil war.A few years later his parents got divorced, something Mr Ellie said had a strong impact on him. He said the people he ended up befriending became family to him; people he believed had his best interests at heart.
"I know there's specifically programs working with young men from African migrant backgrounds, to help to deliver those strong development skills that young people ... had been missing out on, she said.Therapeutic specialist, David Chikwuba, is among those pushing for more cultural competency training in the industry, in the hopes that fewer young people will boycott available support in fear of being misunderstood.
"I know where our people are, I know they are in churches, they are in mosques, they are in parks playing soccer, they are in the basketball courts playing basketball," Mr Chikwuba said."And if we can't drag it, we must make it ourselves."Mr Chikwuba said he also wanted to see more funding invested into community events to invest in the skills young people have, something Mr Ellie said was vital to the work he does today.
