Of course, so could Joe Musgrove's decision to stay in Peoria while fellow Padre led Japan to WBC title
I love that Yu Darvish pitched in the World Baseball Classic — don’t blame me or the WBC if his arm gives out this summer — and I love that Joe Musgrove decided against it.It’s a big thing to represent one’s country. It’s bigger to do it inside one’s country. And it’s even bigger to pitchAdvertisement
It takes guts to pitch in games such as Tuesday night’s WBC championship game, played in Miami. Compounding Darvish’s challenge, he lacked his best pitches and wasn’t accustomed to relief work. Soon after he was brought in to open the eighth inning, he tossed a fat pitch to Kyle Schwarber, who devoured it. The home run reminded folks that Schwarber clouted a Darvish pitch just last October during the National League Championship Series. That takes guts, too.
Surely, seven weeks was plenty of time for the third-year Padre to answer any and all of Ohtani’s questions about life as a Padre and living in San Diego. Given that Darvish is under contract through 2028, when he’ll be 41, he has to come off as credible in his Padres endorsements.
