Zach Davies' signing leaves the Diamondbacks less reliant on young pitching and able to more quickly pivot if starters struggle.

The Diamondbacks’ decision to re-sign right-hander Zach Davies to a one-year deal creates an impediment for their stable of young starting pitchers to crack the major league rotation. That was a possibility that General Manager Mike Hazen acknowledged during a call with reporters on Wednesday, the day the deal was made official.

“And don’t pitch well, we realistically have one or two other guys that are ready … somebody gets hurt, now you’re down to one that’s in Triple-A,” Hazen said. “I think that creates chasing our tail at times during the course of the season.” Over the course of 11 starts in the second half last year, Bumgarner posted a 6.50 ERA. With Davies in the fold, it could allow the club to more quickly move on from Bumgarner, who is owed $37 million over the final two years of his contract, should those struggles continue into this season.

Davies received a $5 million guarantee with a chance to earn another $3 million in bonuses based on games started. It also includes a mutual option for $5.5 million.Hazen all but confirmed reports that the Diamondbacks had dipped their toes in the big-ticket free-agent market, including pursuits of shortstops Xander Bogaerts and Dansby Swanson before they landed with the Padres and Cubs, respectively.

However, he said that just because the club was unable to land such a deal doesn’t mean it still has a large sum left over to distribute among a number of players. Ownership would have raised the payroll only for the right player.
