Lawyers for Zachary Rolfe have asked the Northern Territory coroner to 'consider recusing herself' from an inquest into the death of Kumanjayi Walker 'on the grounds of apprehended bias'.

Two weeks before his scheduled appearance at the coronial inquest into the death of Kumanjayi Walker, Zachary Rolfe has asked the Northern Territory coroner to "consider recusing herself" from the proceedings, "on the grounds of apprehended bias".Coroner Elisabeth Armitage has been presiding over the inquest into the death of Kumanjayi Walker since last year

The inquest has spent almost 60 sitting days over the past 12 months examining the circumstances of Mr Walker's death.In November last year, Judge Armitage and most of the lawyers involved in the hearings also made a historic trip to the remote community of Yuendumu, 300 kilometres northwest of Alice Springs, where the 19-year-old Warlpiri-Luritja man was killed.

"People have roles and responsibilities to the person who has passed away … this has been happening forever. Sources have told the ABC Mr Rolfe's lawyers have also requested access to transcripts and recordings of the portions of the Yuendumu trip they were not present for.The coroner is expected to make a ruling on the recusal application by late next week, days before the inquest is set to resume.
