The Astros paid tribute to one of their most stunning trade acquisitions, a man brought here to win a World Series only to be removed seven outs away from finishing it. Their commemorative video failed to include any highlights from that ill-fated night in October 2019.
Greinke got wind of the video while warming up in the visitors’ bullpen. John Anderson’s “Seminole Wind,” his warmup music throughout a 2½-year Houston tenure, blared overhead. Greinke looked toward a sparse crowd showering him with praise, waved his right hand and continued to throw.Greinke appeared unchanged from the end of his Astros tenure. He ceded hard contact, could not control righthanded hitters and gave his team no chance to win.
The same problems plaguing him then haunt him now. Eight of the Astros’ 10 hits against Greinke came from righthanded hitters. Greinke allowed an .828 OPS to righties last season. The Astros averaged a 91.6 mph exit velocity on the 21 balls they put in play against him. Five of their hits were struck 100 mph or harder.
Bregman finished with three hits against Greinke. Aledmys Díaz had two and then struck a two-run home run against reliever Jackson Kowar. Yordan Alvarez added another in the eighth, a solo blast to bring “M-V-P” chants to Minute Maid Park.
