ZOM100 is in the running for the summer season's best anime - and for good reason! 💥
s real power is how it goes above and beyond expectations thanks to incredible direction and some really experimental animation.s premiere episode has a major gear change two-thirds of the way through. It replaces a grainy static view of the world, symbolic of Akira's gloomy outlook and exhausting job, with bursts of vibrancy and colour.
In an exceptional three-minute sequence, as the realisation dawns that he'll never have to return to work, Akira's world comes completely alive – despite the presence of some very hungry corpses. Not only is the animation direction here really wonderful, and tonally spot on in the way it mirrors Akira's rapidly changing worldview, but it subverts one of zombie fiction's most boring tropes.
In fact, it's not even just that colour returns to the world. Rather than just having splashes of bright red blood and guts fill the frame, à laFountains of blue, green and bright yellow make those initial scenes even more visually interesting – while also obscuring some of the more gory violence. It all comes to a head when Akira bursts out onto the roof of his apartment building to escape the pursuing horde. He, and the viewer, see a bright blue sky while an airplane crashes to the ground behind him and golden petals obscure the frame.s direction throughout the episode has a rich and cinematic feel.
Extremely close-up angles of Akira's face and eyes during the black-and-white scenes make for uncomfortable viewing, and a moment where he rips apart the black widescreen bars of the frame is seriously impressive.is a show that wants to push the visual boundaries of both what weekly anime series and zombie fiction can look like.ZOM 100: Bucket List of the DeadDisney+ Watch Anime On Disney+
