Booth has been studying virgin births, known scientifically as parthenogenesis, for 11 years.
He found that the foetus shared more than 99.9 per cent of its mother's DNA, confirming it had no father. Booth explained to BBC that animals may begin self-impregnating when their species brinks on extinction. ''The fact that the mechanism of parthenogenesis is the same in so many different species suggests that it is a very ancient trait that has been inherited throughout the ages," he said.
