When I first joined social media, my feed was filled with what my friends were up to. Now, Facebook has been taken over by unhinged suggested posts from groups I have no interest in.

Macquarie Dictionary picked up this trend when it named its 2024 word of the year enshittification, defined as the gradual deterioration of a service or product brought about by a reduction in the quality of service provided, especially of an online platform, and as a consequence of profit-seeking. However, on Wednesday Zuckerberg said the fact-checkers “have just been too politically biased and have destroyed more trust than they created”, and that Meta would be moving forward with a “community notes” style of corrections.

For those of us chronically online, whether for work or not, the move is just the latest nail in social media’s coffin as companies move away from providing a platform for connection, a virtual “public square” as Instagram head Adam Mosseri said when launching Threads, to platforms that purely serve their commercial and political agendas., I’ve spent a lot of time in social media comment sections – more time than most mental health professionals would perhaps recommend.
