A traveller has been ordered to pay NT$200,000 after trying to bring a lunch box containing pork into Taiwan.Taiwan's customs officials have issued a fine of NT$200,000 to a traveller for attempting to bring a lunch box containing pork into the country.

The Indonesian national had arrived from Hong Kong on April 30 when a quarantine dog sniffed out the "roast chicken and pork combo", said the Taiwanese Animal and Plant Health Inspection Agency.Taiwan introduced fines of NT$200,000 for bringing pork products to the island from countries affected by African swine fever following an outbreak in China in 2018.The highly infectious disease affects both domestic and wild pigs and has a fatality rate of about 80 per cent.According to the World Organisation for Animal Health , ASF is responsible for massive losses in pig populations and drastic economic consequences. "It is not a danger to human health, but it has devastating effects on pig populations and the farming economy," the WOAH says. "The virus is highly resistant in the environment, meaning that it can survive on clothes, boots, wheels, and other materials. It can also survive in various pork products, such as ham, sausages or bacon." Australia, which has so far remained free from ASF, has fines of up to $6,260 for travellers who knowingly fail to declare high-risk goods such as pork and other meat products or provide false or misleading information.TaiwanPeople using sticks, shovels and bare hands to recover villagers buried in deadly PNG landslide It's been called 'bonkers' and a joke', but here's how PM Rushi Sunak wants to put his country's teenagers to workTeenager jailed for life over 'terrifying' murder of 70-year-old aged care resident 'Evidence has been obliterated': Pathologist unable to determine cause of campers Russell Hill and Carol Clay's death Charlise Mutten's mother says accused killer told her he may need to 'get rid of some evidence', court hearsWhat to do when you feel a cold coming Mediation talks break down in Hawthorn historical mistreatment case at Australian Human Rights Commission Woman accused of murdering Queensland police officer swerved to hit him as a 'scare tactic', court hears'He was loved and he will be missed': Parents of golfer Grayson Murray speak after the 30-year-old's shock death It's been called 'bonkers' and a joke', but here's how PM Rushi Sunak wants to put his country's teenagers to workPeople using sticks, shovels and bare hands to recover villagers buried in deadly PNG landslidePeople using sticks, shovels and bare hands to recover villagers buried in deadly PNG landslide It's been called 'bonkers' and a joke', but here's how PM Rushi Sunak wants to put his country's teenagers to workTeenager jailed for life over 'terrifying' murder of 70-year-old aged care resident
