The head of one of the busiest emergency departments in Australia is calling for a designated hospital for older patients to alleviate chronic bed shortages and ambulance ramping across the country.
He said the issue stemmed from an increase in the number of elderly patients occupying hospital beds. "An elderly population has the biggest impact on the emergency department, particularly with ambulance ramping and all the difficulties associated with that."Dr Green, who has urged governments to build geriatric-specific hospitals, said there needed to be greater acknowledgement of the complexities involved with geriatric care. But some health professionals aren't convinced it's the solution.
"Unless you fix the back end, or even the front end of admission, it'll get blocked because we don't have enough aged care beds."
