She calls it a big job with a big responsibility, but Beck O'Connor says she is ready to help protect the rights of victims.
She calls it a big job with a big responsibility, but Beck O'Connor says she is ready for it."My mission is pretty simple," she offers.
"It's about promoting and protecting the rights of victims of crime and to ensure they're going to get the right supports at the right time.Australian Bureau of Statistics figures show nearly 300,000 Queenslanders fell victim to crime in 2023, with dramatic rises in sexual assault and robbery.O'Connor says many victims aren't aware there's a Charter of Victims' Rights and that government agencies must uphold them.
Thousands more applications were made to the state government's Victim Assist Queensland agency in 2022-23, with those relating to domestic and family violence making up more than half of them."My office is independent of government," she said, promising to give frank and fearless advice. "So this is a real opportunity to have some accountability about how we are upholding the rights of victims of crime."
"It concerns me a lot because from a victim-survivors' perspective, the most important thing is to be believed and for someone to take their complaints seriously."Photo shows A woman hold a photo of her son.Photo shows People speaking to media and holding Voice for Victims signs.Photo shows Three women looking into the camera.Photo shows Anthony Albanese Chris Minns Jacinta Allan, prime minister in focus.
