The Big Cigar tells the tale of a Black Panther leader and a Hollywood producer, but leaves out half the storyEnter the Apple TV+ series The Big Cigar , which is being touted as a tale that's "All true. Mostly."
Huey Newton, then-Black Panther Party minister of defence, raises his arm as he is surrounded by the press at Philadelphia's International Airport upon arrival for a 1970 convention. While Newton was in prison, the Black Panther party expanded into community support programs, starting dozens of food banks, healthcare services and, most famously, the Free Breakfast for Children program.with the murder of 17-year-old sex worker Kathleen Smith.
Then in the opening credits the audience is reminded that the whole show is based on a 2012 article by US journalist Joshuah Bearman titled The Big Cigar: How a Hollywood producer smuggled Huey Newton to Cuba., which chronicles the efforts to smuggle US hostages out of Iran under the guise of a fake film production in the 80s.
The article was originally published in the December 2012 issue of Playboy. As far as the ABC knows, it's almost impossible to find it in 2024 unless you happen to own the physical edition.to become a feature film. Those plans fell through and it was another decade before it was announced that Apple TV+ was picking it up in the form of a series.
