A newly released report shows Australia's icebreaker, the RSV Nuyina, is facing a $100 million cost blowout by 2030 due to rising crew, fuel and maintenance costs.

The Australian Antarctic Division's budgetary outlook was prepared in August last year and tabled in the senate this week. This month's federal budget included an additional $109 million over three years to cover a range of increased costs affecting the Nuyina .

"A forward budget estimate for RSV Nuyina's operate and maintain phase has highlighted significant issues with the funding model for , attributed to a number of realised risks and unforeseen issues since the contract signature," the outlook states. Maintenance costs are also higher than originally envisaged due to the "complexity" of the vessel, it says.

Federal Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek accused the former Coalition government of mismanaging Australia's Antarctic Program.
