When you live hundreds or even thousands of kilometres from the nearest coastline, fresh seafood can be hard to come by. Fortunately, rural Australia has an 'inland lobster' with a flavour described as 'just like eating prawns and crayfish'.

Yabbying is an important part of rural life and a favourite pastime for many country Australians.Far west locals have noticed a significant decline in the yabby population surrounding the Menindee area.

When you live hundreds or even thousands of kilometres from the nearest coastline, access to fresh seafood is limited. The skill and enjoyment in trying to catch the crafty freshwater crustaceans is also a part of the motivation for "yabbying".) is the best-known freshwater crayfish species native to Australia. It is known to bury itself in the muddy depths of dams, creeks, and river systems for months at a time.A Barkindji elder from the far west NSW town of Menindee, Barbara Quayle has fond memories of yabbying along the Darling River when she was growing up."When Mum and Dad were fishing, we would have a piece of meat on the end of a string," she said. Then, it was a matter of that patience and skill."Then you either have a net or come in from around the back, careful it doesn't see you, and grab them with your hands."A fourth-generation farmer says orders for yabbies are going gangbusters during the festive period, as people look for affordable seafood alternatives for Christmas lunch.Yabbies, often described as the "inland lobster", is a flavour that West Darling Fishing Association president Robert Bosch describes as "just like eating prawns and crayfish"."We used to catch them as kids anytime we wanted to," Mr Bosch said. But Mr Bosch said he had noticed the yabby population declining, citing poor river health as a major contributing factor. In late 2018 and early 2019, a series of fish kills around Menindee highlighted problems with the river's health, its management, and the effect of drought."At the moment the water is in such bad condition," Mr Bosch said. " we were getting a lot of yabbies in the Darling and within the Menindee lake scheme.""Back when it started being as sick as it is ," she said. The summer months are typically when yabbies surface after months in a dormant state in the freshwater mud. Once they have been caught, Mr Bosch said it was a straightforward process to get them from the water to your plate. "Get yourself a large drum, half full of water, put in about a cup or two of salt, bring it to the boil," he said." take it off the fire. Let it stand." While many enjoy them in a salad or sandwich with dipping sauce, Mr Bosch likes to keep things simple.Get our local newsletter, delivered free each Friday'Platypus killer' yabby traps 'in garden sheds everywhere' face banIsrael shoots down most of Iran's drones, but some strike IDF targetsTreasurer alludes to major foreign investment reform, iron ore to affect budget surplus Arnold Dix was pivotal in rescuing 41 men from an underground tomb.
