Sparks have flown during a tense debate into plans for 35,000 new homes in an inner city area, with claims of a conspiracy and doxing.Opponents of a controversial plan to enable up to 35,000 new homes over 15 years in a popular inner city Sydney region have clashed with councillors during a fiery public debate interjected by claims of a “conspiracy” and doxing.

More than 100 people turned out on Monday night for the Inner West Council's public forum into its Fairer Future Plan, the Labor-led council’s alternative to the state government’s mid-rise and transport-oriented programs. At the outset of the forum, Mayor Darcy Byrne said the 80 planned speakers were, he believed, the most that any NSW council had ever chosen to hear from, but regularly faced interjections from a disgruntled, disagreeing crowd. Mr Byrne was forced to urge members of the audience to remain quiet on multiple occasions during the first 20-odd speakers, the majority of whom supported the proposal, with some in the audience heard claiming a “conspiracy”. “Why has it the list has been sorted that all the speakers for are speaking first?” one attended interjected, with council staff having earlier told the audience the order was based upon receipt of registration for the forum. Mr Darcy faced further forceful criticism from the crowd when he noted the quality of young people speaking before the forum, and was forced defend himself, stating: “I thought it was an in offensive comment and certainly true”. Tim Bradshaw, from Dulwich Hill, said he was “disappointed by those who want more housing, but always not like that”, what he claimed was a “conservative attitude”, and “lies” that homes were already marked for demolition. “I’m profoundly disappointed by those private school educated silver spooners cosplaying as the working class so they can exploit the fears of people who have worked their whole lives with their own hands,” Mr Bradshaw said. “We simply need more housing, and we need it now, and he only way to get that housing is to build what is feasible. A 30 per cent affordable housing requirement is just not feasible and will result in absolutely nothing being built.” The Inner West Council’s original plan was for 2 per cent of new developments to be reserved for affordable housing, rising to 5 per cent in five years, but now proposes slower growth by just 0.25 per cent per year for four years.Among its defenders was Sydney YIMBY chair Justin Simon who, after claiming he had been doxed as a result of his support for the proposal, said 10 per cent affordable housing would require buildings of up to 40 storeys. “None of the dozens of opponents that I’ve spoken to about this plan have been able to tell me which streets we should be building in and how tall, despite spending 10 plus years campaigning against new homes in their suburbs.”The Chris Mins’ government has introduced housing programs aimed at mid-rise and around transport hubs. This is part of Labor’s approach to the housing crisis, from the federal level to the state and down to the council level, which is not to solve it, but to make it worse,” she said. “That is what this plan will do. It will make the housing crisis in the Inner West worse, not to build public housing, but to tear it down, not to bring down house prices and rents, but to ensure they continue to increase indefinitely.” Ms Norton acknowledged the need for amenities and public spaces the plan promises, but that “we don’t need a plan that is purpose built for developers. We need one purpose built for ordinary people in our community”. Rachel Evans from Marrickville and the Action for Public Housing group described the plan as a “slap in the face to the community” and that to fix Australia’s housing crisis, “It’s not supply. It’s a question of distribution. “Selling off our public housing stock, turbocharging tax incentives for investors, and letting Airbnb loose on communities, has commodified housing and has led us to this situation. It’s not migrants or students to blame.”
