‘I’d lose a lot of respect’: Norris fumes over Mad Max crash as all angles revealed — Talking Points

The Austria n Grand Prix was an easy Max Verstappen victory right until it wasn’t.For much of the race Verstappen had held a comfortable seven-second lead that seemed unlikely to be bridged by Lando Norris , but a rare slow 6.5-second stop from Red Bull Racing sliced that down to practically nothing.Norris, who had followed him into the lane on the same lap, saw a rare shot at victory. On lap 64 the pair collided under brakes at turn 3. Both picked up punctures.

Norris’s fourth excursion beyond the track boundary was on lap 59, when he dive-bombed Verstappen into turn 3 and ended up running off the road. He wound up ahead of the Dutchman but ceded the position almost immediately. “Two times I managed to avoid it and not lock up and run into him, and the third time he just ran into me.

Changing direction under braking is dangerous. A driver is fully committed when they hit the brakes and has limited ability to take evasive action if the car they’re battling with suddenly changes heading. “But it’s still a tough one to take when we’re fighting for a win and trying to be fair from my side, and he just wasn’t.

“Everyone can have their own opinion, but I’m the one driving, so I think I’m best in control. Everyone can have their own opinion. From the outside it’s easy to judge and comment, but whatever, it’s what happens.” Verstappen might review the result of the 2019 Austrian Grand Prix, which he won with a move on Charles Leclerc at turn 3 that bumped the Ferrari driver over the kerbs and off the road. The stewards that day opted against a penalty, allowing his win to stand.

“The problem behind it is that if you don’t address these things honestly, they will come back,” he told Sky Sports. “They came back today because they were not addressed properly in the past when there were some fights with Lewis that needed to be punished in a harsher way.“We have so much respect for Red Bull, so much respect for Max. They don’t need to do this. It’s a way to almost compromise your reputation.

He was penalised three grid places at the following race for taking himself and Hamilton out of the race in Italy, and he was handed a meaningless 10-second penalty for causing a crash in Saudi Arabia. Running Hamilton off the road in Brazil came without punishment. That was particularly so in the immediate aftermath of this crash, when both drivers were scrabbling over the road with punctures. Despite being clearly set to lose a podium finish, Verstappen still attempted to block Norris from passing him in a somewhat unhinged defence.

“He picked up a puncture, he got the penalty. I thought the penalty was harsh. That’s racing sometimes. Despite the spectacular conclusion to the race, it leaves a fascinating chapter of the unfolding Red Bull Racing-McLaren rivalry unwritten.
