Nestled in dense bushland in Tasmania's north exists the state's oldest geocache. It's attracted hundreds of people globally in the search for it.
Geocaching is a worldwide treasure hunt for small containers known as caches, with users following coordinates to find them.
Ms Markham is the latest in a decades-long succession of more than 600 people who have travelled from across the world to this very spot — all in pursuit of Tasmania's oldest cache.Users worldwide plant a cache containing a logbook, listing its coordinates within the Geocaching site or app. Fellow users then follow the coordinates to the location using a phone or Global Positioning System device.
When the SA program ended on May 2, 2000, GPS signals became 10 times more accurate. The very next day, the world's first geocache was planted.Within weeks, Australia's first cache was planted, shortly followed by Tasmania's first cache. On February 25, 2001, American tourist Jerry Medlin planted the cache known as "North Tassie".The rudimentary container held some US coins, a piece of paper and a pencil.
Although he and his team have not formally adopted "North Tassie", they believe preserving it is important."There are never going to be new 'old caches', so we want to keep them alive for everyone else to enjoy."The proliferation of geocaching content shared on social media platforms has attracted a new audience to the game.
