Sailing: Luna Rossas journey to the America's Cup was nearly cut short, after lightning came frighteningly close on day five of the challenger series
A sailing simulator in a Sydney office building is where Australia II skipper John Bertrand has been masterminding Australia ’s next history-making moment in The America ’s Cup.
“We’ve caught up with John several times and he’s been guiding the campaign which is pretty cool to have access to someone who is such a big name in Australian sailing and their knowledge is a huge asset to the team. Four sailors can be in the boat at one time and while team member Olivia Price said “it’s pretty weird to be not sailing but sailing”, the simulator has proven to be invaluable.
On the water, the Australians were doing up to 40 knots - which is equal to 74.08 kilometres per hour - and Price was pinching herself about going that fast and being a part of the first ever women’s competition. “The America’s Cup is always about technological innovation and the development of the sport. You can compare it to Formula One,” she said.
