Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has warned Australians to put firewood on their Christmas lists to keep warm next winter after NSW spent the week on alert for blackouts amid an intense heatwave.
Peter Dutton has told Australians to stock up on firewood to keep warm next winter amid fears of power outages in NSW before sharing a friendly hug with outgoing Labor minister Bill Shorten in a Friday morning TV appearance as parliament wraps up for 2024.between 3pm to 8pm in a bid to avoid widespread power outages as temperatures reached almost 40 degrees in some areas.
The Opposition Leader hit out at Labor, claiming there was a lack of investment in coal more generally across Australia because government subsidies were being put towards renewables. “In terms of the coal, did you know, fun facts here, that in the last quarter of the Coalition government, 36 times the regulator said that there had to be a notice to watch out for a drawdown on resource, on our supplies and in the third quarter of the Coalition government it happened 55 times,” Mr Shorten said.

What happens is these old coal plants break down, the companies who own them won't reinvest in them and so what we're doing is we're making sure that we've got renewables in the future.”
