AFL: The AFL CEOs have met to dicuss a possible fixture shakeup in anticipation of the inclusion of Tasmania into the league.
With the AFL in the midst of one of its closest-ever finishes to a home-and-away season, the addition of a wildcard format to the league has been deemed a “no-brainer”. Under the proposed model, seventh would play 10th and eighth would play ninth at the end of the traditional home-and-away season , in a bid that would naturally widen the scope for more sides to play in September.
Port Adelaide would host Melbourne at Adelaide Oval in a knockout clash, while Essendon would clash with the Western Bulldogs at the MCG under the projected model. New to Kayo? The match would in theory take place during the current pre-finals bye, which if applied to this year’s fixture, would be held on August 30 and 31. Speaking on Fox Footy’s Midweek Tackle, the Herald Sun’s Sam Landsberger revealed the concept had been seriously discussed at last week’s league CEO’s conference meeting. “There was so much support for this; it hasn’t gone to the AFL commission yet, but I believe this could go to the commission very shortly – even this year, potentially ratified for 2025,” Landsberger begun by saying.“One club CEO at the conference last week pointed out that premierships are already almost impossible to win from seventh or eighth on the ladder, they were against it.” This century, only the Western Bulldogs in 2016 have won the premiership from outside the top four – and only two sides have ever made the Grand Final doing so .Among the benefits club CEO’s saw in the model included extra ‘finalists’, a greater purpose for more teams at the back end of a season – which by extension would then more teams are in play for a ‘top 10’ spot. Landsberger also added that the “emotional joy” attached to winning an extra knock-out match for the year would be “significant”.Liam Jones in frame to return early | 00:58In addition to the wildcard model discussed, in-season tournaments were also floated. “They’re looking at a few ways to jazz up the fixture while still playing home-and-away games,” Landsberger continued. “One model would be you send four clubs up to the Gold Coast in school holidays, they play a round-robin, you bring in tourism dollars. “At the end of it, there’s a trophy up for grabs, prize money a medal for the best player in that series – maybe even a bonus premiership point for the team that comes out on top.”
