Experts are urging the Family, Domestic and Sexual Violence Commission to appoint an Aboriginal family violence commissioner
First Nations women are 33 times more likely to be hospitalised for injuries related to family violence and six times more likely to die in comparison to non- Indigenous women.
None of the six panel members were Indigenous women, however, Wiradjuri man Dr Todd Fernando was on the panel. She said the commission must improve how it works with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. "We have no clue really as to what recommendations will be made and it's highly doubtful that they will be strong from the Indigenous perspective because we certainly were not given a seat at that table."
"I have to say though I am a little bit disappointed, in that we in the sector know that there is a dire need for drastic investment within this sector, we just can't keep up with the demand.""However, it's not enough, with respect," she said.Ms Schwartz said it is appalling that on average a woman is killed every week in an act of gendered violence.
