From caring for a parent to managing your own health, is there a right way to approach work at times when you need to take a lot of leave?

Who doesn't fantasise about an extended break from your workplace to travel around Australia or to embark on a personal Greek odyssey? From caring for a parent to managing your own health or medical treatment, taking an extended break as an employee can be tricky to negotiate both practically and emotionally.

If you're wrestling with how to manage competing demands, she says you should question whether you're valuing your time as much as your manager's or employer's. According to Professor Anya Johnson, guilt, along with shame and anxiety, is a common emotion that people can experience when taking an extended leave.

She says feeling guilty about taking a work break could be related to a variety of factors, such as people pleasing. "There is a place for having that level of self-compassion and recognising that if the shoe was on the other foot, you would likely want to give them compassion.""Being able to recognise the negative emotions that you're experiencing, name them and process them in a way that helps you identify that it isn't helpful, is also a good strategy."Paula Brough is an Organisational Psychology Professor at Griffith University in Brisbane/Meanjin.

Setting a specific amount of time, adds Professor Brough, "will help most accept and manage that period" as will " in touch with supervisors with a little bit of what's going on" during your absence. She says if you're feeling nervous about the request, you can frame it to acknowledge that you are anxious and that you're asking for something that could be tricky to accommodate.
