Former Collingwood president expresses support for Andrew Wilkie's claims about players gaming the AFL's drug policy and faking injuries to avoid testing on game days.
Andrew Wilkie , who used parliamentary privilege to level allegations about the AFL 's drug policy "I was actually pretty open to Andrew Wilkie coming out and saying these things because it shone a light on it," the former Collingwood president said.Mr Wilkie alleged in parliament that numerous players were gaming the AFL 's illicit drug policy , which provides three strikes for players who test positive for drugs such as cocaine on non-game days.
Players live in a world where societal use of illicit substances is commonplace and that can leave them vulnerable to extortion from anyone who manages to record them using and posts the footage to social media or sells it to news outlets."Heads out of the sand, let's be grown-ups about this and take a grown-up approach," McGuire said before he called for offending players to be named."I believe there should be punitive action and you should be named.
"But I think the medical public health literature would support the fact that that's not going to change some of the complex behavioural issues that we deal with when we're talking about illicit substances." "We're reviewing the policy and we now need to do what we want to do is evolve our policy … so that it's fit for purpose for 2024 and beyond."
