Major retailers are advocating for an increase in workers' paid leave to five weeks a year in order to attract long-term employees. This comes as the industry union calls for fewer work hours due to rising productivity and automation. IKEA, Apple, and Big W have all made agreements to increase paid leave or offer flexible work options to their employees. The Shop Distributive and Allied Employees Association supports the idea of five weeks' leave becoming the new standard.
Major retailers are at the forefront of a push to lift workers’ paid leave to five weeks a year in a bid to attract long-term staff , as the industry union lobbies for fewer work hours in response to rising productivity and automation. IKEA has agreed to increase more than 4000 workers’ paid leave from 20 to 25 days a year as part of an agreement with the retail union that also bans casual hires and enshrines offers to work a four-day week.
The furniture giant’s move, which followsand Apple doing similar deals, comes as Big W reached its own agreement on Monday to allow 15,000 staff to choose between higher pay or an extra week’s leave. The Shop Distributive and Allied Employees Association says five weeks should be the new standard after raising concerns that Australia’s once generous four weeks’ leave is falling behind other countries. For their part, employers want to rid the perception of retail jobs as transitory and entice more long-term staff in the face of low unemploymen
