Surge in cases of invasive pneumococcal disease spark calls for federal govt to prioritise rollout of newer vaccines for broader protection
The Immunisation Foundation of Australia released new data on Monday as it urges the federal government to take action on a concerning 20-year high of cases in Australia. The IFA has launched the ‘Prioritise Pneumococcal Protection’ campaign to “raise awareness of the serious risks posed by pneumococcal disease”.
“New generation vaccines need to be rolled out through the National Immunisation Program without further delay. We simply can’t risk not having the best available pneumococcal protection,” she said. Invasive pneumococcal disease can be particularly deadly to children, and can have a serious impact within hours or days. There are three factors experts believe may be driving the surge, including evolving strains, declining vaccination rates and the bacteria’s resistance to antibiotics.
