Jagmeet Singh, who pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving after hitting grandfather Nengguang Wen at a crossing in Adelaide's south last year, is sentenced to three years and four months' home detention.
Jagmeet Singh has been sentenced to three years and four months' home detention for causing death by dangerous driving.
"As you approached the intersection of South Road and Furness Avenue the lights went red, but you did not slow down or stop — you continued at a speed of about 56 kilometres per hour through that intersection," he said. Outside court, Mr Wen's daughter Nilla Wen, said her family does not hold a grudge against Singh but will continue to advocate for road safety.
Judge Press said Singh has no recollection of the crash and had been suffering blackouts following a brain injury the month before. "It is not possible to adequately summarise or describe the pain and loss that each described, the grief they are experiencing of the loss of a husband, father, grandfather and friend in these circumstances is unimaginable," he said.
"His passing has left a significant hole in their lives and regrettably nothing I do here today can or will change that."
