Jo Davies finishes up at Opera Australia today, just nine months after she took over as artistic director in November last year.Opera Australia has lost its second artistic director in two years after Jo Davies stepped down today after less than a year in the role.
She started full-time in the job in November last year, after working part-time and remotely as artistic consultant in 2023. "In the last month, it's just become clear that, really, our thinking wasn't aligned well enough for us to continue working on future programming into 2026." Three Australian directors helmed Opera Australia’s recent production of Puccini’s Il trittico: Constantine Costi, Shaun Rennie and Imara Savage.Over her 20-year career, Davies has worked in London, New York and Paris, directing shows on the West End and Broadway and for international opera companies including London's Barbican, Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, Washington National Opera, English National Opera, Dutch National Opera and Opera North in Leeds.
She's also proud to have facilitated collaborations with companies across Australia, including Opera Queensland, Victorian Opera, Circa and Sydney Chamber Opera, and to have improved gender equity at the company.
