Lilley, 50, earned international fame for his mockumentary-style series for the ABC such as We Can Be Heroes , Summer Heights High and Angry Boys . The comedian later inked a multi-million-dollar deal with Netflix to create more whacky characters for the streaming giant, who also picked up streaming rights to Lilley’s back catalogue. However, several of Lilley’s programs were abruptly removed from Netflix during the 2020 Black Lives Matter movement due to blackface concerns.On Angry Boys, Lilley portrayed a fictional African-American rapper S.mouse and performed a song called Squashed N****, which prompted international condemnation. He also portrayed Asian characters Jen Okazaki, a Japanese “tiger mum” in Angry Boys and Chinese physics student Ricky Wong in We Can Be Heroes. For one of his most famous characters, Lilley donned brown body make up and a curly wig to portrayed troubled Pacific Islander teen Jonah Takalua. In 2023, Lilley told Unilad that his programs were not “cancelled” and still readily available on other platforms.“All of my shows have been and always are available,” he said.“So there’s no issue – it just seems to be more of a fake take.” The four-time Logie winner has about 149,000 subscribers on YouTube and originally started the channel to defiantly share clips of his controversial cancelled characters. Lilley has more recently pivoted to creating vlogs interacting with Aussie wildlife, including “the day I saw six echidnas”, “dingo dodger” and “I kissed a kangaroo and I liked it”. While Lilley’s programs used to attract over 1 million viewers a week for the national broadcaster, his wildlife content has attracted a far more modest audience.
