'Wrong': Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke takes swipe at ex-Liberal candidate over viral ' ISIS brides' claim Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke has debunked a viral video from former Liberal candidate Katherine Deves in which she suggested a group of women and children on her flight could be" ISIS brides".

Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke has taken a sensational swipe at former Liberal candidate Katherine Deves, debunking a viral video she posted raising speculation “ISIS brides” were on her flight back from Thailand as “wrong”.The former Liberal candidate for the federal NSW seat of Warringah published a video to her Instagram account on the weekend asking questions about a group of more than two dozen women, wearing niqabs and hijabs, and young children on her flight from Bangkok last Thursday night.“Were they people being brought in from Syria or Gaza, which is very much counter to what most Australians want, which is not to have people brought in from terror-infested areas of the world. I don’t know, but I did see these people come in and once we got off the plane, they suddenly disappeared. Didn’t see them in customs, didn’t see them in luggage collection or Immigration.” Ms Deves published a video to her Instagram account on the weekend asking questions about a group of more than two dozen women, wearing niqabs and hijabs, and young children on her flight from Bangkok last Thursday night. Picture: Jeremy PiperIn a statement to Sky News, Mr Burke simply said: “Katherine Deves is wrong, again”. A Department of Home Affairs spokesperson said while it could not comment on individual cases for privacy reasons, “Australia is deeply concerned by the humanitarian situation in Myanmar.” “Australia’s Humanitarian Program accepts a range of individuals assessed as refugees by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, including stateless individuals,” the spokesperson said. “The government’s Humanitarian Program contributes to regional stability, and ensures we benefit from the significant contributions of humanitarian entrants to Australian society. In a statement to Sky News, Mr Burke simply said: “Katherine Deves is wrong, again.” Picture: NewsWire/Martin Ollman "The government is committed to protecting the safety of all Australians and has robust domestic measures and strong international partnerships in place to do so." A genocide hearing which began at the International Court of Justice this month heard Myanmar had deliberately targeted the Rohingya minority with “horrific violence” during a crackdown in 2017. Hundreds of thousands of Rohingya Muslims have fled the violence in their Buddhist-majority homeland, many escaping to neighbouring Bangladesh. Ms Deves began her video by saying it was her “eye-witness account of the Australian government bringing stateless Muslims into our country and this occurred on Thursday… on the day of the memorial for the Bondi massacre, where Islamic jihadis murdered 15 Jews in cold blood”. She finishes the clip by asking: “Who is bringing them in? Who is paying for them once they’re here?... I want to know what the government is doing”. Following Mr Burke’s response, Ms Deves doubled down on her challenge to the government, telling Sky News: “It is typical of this government’s secrecy that the Minister for Immigration’s reply is a false ad hominem attack rather than a substantive response as to who these people are. And if these are not the ISIS brides, then where are the ISIS brides? The Australian people deserve to know”. Mr Burke was under increasing pressure prior to the Bondi attack to explain secret talks he had with advocates calling for the repatriation of six “ISIS brides”. Australian Federal Police Assistant Commissioner Stephen Nutt confirmed in October preparations were being made for the arrivals of more so-called “ISIS brides”, after a group of six recently returned. Opposition Leader Sussan Ley has suggested Prime Minister Anthony Albanese misled parliament over statements Australia did not provide assistance to the group of six women.
