Someone spent years plastering deepfake porn of Hannah Grundy online. It was a betrayal that turned her life upside down.
It was the second message Hannah Grundy had received from a mysterious internet stranger who called herself "Sally". The first email had been brief and vague, claiming Hannah was some kind of target.. "It also didn't have a link to anything. It didn't ask me to reply to anything … so I just deleted it."When she showed it to her partner, Kris Ventura , he agreed that it was "probably a scam" but their interest was piqued.
The link Kris opened took him to a thread on an online message board titled The Destruction of Hannah. They entered the names of women they found on the website into searches on Facebook and Instagram and used mutual friends to zero in on the person who linked them together."Of all the people that we would have guessed, he would have been at the bottom of the list," Kris says.Hayler was a close friend — a hospitality worker and former colleague from Manning Bar described as easy-going and well-liked, if somewhat socially awkward.

A lawyer advised them not to discuss the case with anyone, including other female friends Hayler had targeted.Most importantly, they had to keep up appearances with Hayler himself, who, none the wiser, would regularly reach out with invitations to catch up.But in July 2022, they had a chance meeting at a festival in Sydney's inner west.
Dr Watt documented the posts on the website using a method that preserves metadata, making them admissible as evidence in a court of law.It's the kind of work, he adds, police are unlikely to have capacity to do themselves. Laptops, hard drives and USBs were seized and found to contain folders full of photographs of dozens of women Hayler knew.
Hayler agreed that he'd victimised women he was attracted to and found typing their names on the website empowering.Six women read out victim impact statements describing how their lives had been impacted. "I felt a physiological and psychological shutdown that night that I stayed trapped in for months," she said.
