Poison-laced food used to kill rabbits is being distributed in a region where work is underway to restore the population of an endangered species equally susceptible to the bait.

Carrots laced with poison to control rabbits in the Adelaide Hills are likely killing native animals as well, landowners have warned, amid fears it may have contributed to a reduction in bandicoot sightings.

"Of particular concern to our group is the poison's use in the Southern Mount Lofty Ranges and other areas known to contain the endangered southern brown bandicoot, which we have been trying to save throughout Bandicoot Super Highway project."The $250,000 project, managed in partnership between SURLG and Landscapes SA Hills and Fleurieu , aims to increase habitat for the species, control weeds, and foster an interconnected habitat throughout the hills for the species.

"Fair enough, people may have rabbits, especially out in the bush on farmers' properties, but surely there's a better way of controlling them," Mr Robson said.Adelaide Hills Council, which did not participate in pindone baiting, said it was also toxic to granivorous birds, bandicoots, native rodents like bush rats, and macropods such as the western grey kangaroo.

This included the "judicious use of bait stations" to restrict access, fencing to exclude larger species, and avoidance of baiting near areas that may harbour small non-target mammals, "such as bandicoots".LSAHF regional ecologist Luke Price said rabbits changed ecosystems by eating native vegetation, out-competing native species and causing erosion, and it was a legal responsibility for landholders to control them.
