Port Pirie locals worried about jobs as Nyrstar smelter's future in doubt

Locals say the possible closure of the Port Pirie smelter and the loss of the 900 jobs associated with it would have ongoing effects on the city and the wider Spencer Gulf region.

Nyrstar is the single biggest customer for Eyre Trading, an industrial supply company based in Port Lincoln that also has shops in Port Pirie, Whyalla and Adelaide. Managing director Danny Bartlett said a long-term solution was needed to shore up the jobs at Nyrstar as well as the many others related to it. Mr Bartlett said. He said he would have to cut jobs if the smelter closed.

"We currently employ five local people in our Port Pirie store and we'd have to reassess the size and scale of our operation there, and no doubt that would mean reducing our footprint in Port Pirie," Mr Bartlett said. ABC North and West SA: Viki Ntafillislast August from the federal, SA and Tasmanian governments to allow the struggling smelter to continue its operations. The SA government contributed $55 million, Tasmania contributed $22.5 million and the federal government provided $57.5 million.

Port Pirie Mayor Leon Stephens said the uncertainty of a new package left the community with a sense of deja vu.

"We should have further progressed these negotiations. It's disappointing that it's thrown up in the air again.

"Cr Stephens said residents "need the smelter and the smelter needs to trade". "It's the lifeblood of Pirie, so when there's a speed bump it reverberates right through the community," he said. "If it's a yes or no, everyone just needs to let us know so we can get on with it," Cr Stephens said. Port PIrie resident Zane Hunter said a closure would affect everyone in the city.

"There'll be less money involved in the community as well for a while there.
