Moto GP: Francesco Bagnaia claims Catalan GP to cut the Championship lead.
The six-time MotoGP world champion had just conjured his latest great escape from nowhere – a charge from 14th to third and a fourth straight podium finish in last weekend’s Catalan Grand Prix – and while he was happy that he’d done it, he didn’t think“I’m not proud about it,” he said, grinning partly because of the absurdity of him pulling yet another rabbit out of a hat.
Six events into his Ducati tenure, Marquez is already regularly mixing it with 2023 MotoGP title protagonists Martin and Bagnaia . It’s a simplistic, yet revealing statistical snapshot of what the eye test tells you – places gained from where you qualified, and particularly as it pertains to Marquez’s season.
For a rider who sits third in the standings, Marquez’s average qualifying position ranks just eighth of the 22 riders on the grid, and well behind championship leader Martin and his nearest title rival Bagnaia , first and second in that same category. As recent races have shown, starting positions haven’t mattered a whole lot to Marquez of late.
“Step by step we overtake the riders. I was calm, the race was super long and top five was the target in my head. But then I saw that the pace was there so when I was third … I started to attack. From 14th and with little to lose, he went with the soft-compound rear instead – a risk given the tyre-torturing nature of the track, but one he could live with.
