Marine Marker Found on Sunshine Coast Sparks Emergency Response

A marine marker, a type of pyrotechnic device, was discovered near Peregian Beach leading to an emergency response and a large cordoned-off area.

The Department of Defence has confirmed that a device discovered near Peregian Beach on August 22, 2025, was a 'marine marker'. This device is a smoke-and-flame pyrotechnic commonly used in search and rescue operations, anti-submarine warfare, and maritime research. A Defence spokesperson stated, 'Defence can confirm a Marine marker was located in the vicinity of Peregian Beach , Sunshine Coast on 22 August 2025. Defence assessed the unexploded ordnance (UXO) at the scene.

The UXO was assessed as unsafe for transport and were disposed of onsite.'. Defence routinely assists state and territory policing agencies in the safe recovery or disposal of suspected unexploded military ordnance found in public areas. Police responded to the discovery by enacting an emergency declaration under the Public Safety Preservation Act (PSPA) and establishing a large cordon around the device at 12:30 pm. The exclusion zone encompassed a significant portion of the area, including David Low Way from Podargus Parade to Woodland Drive, as well as Martin Street, Avocet Street, Peregian Esplanade, Parakeet Crescent, Egrer Street, Teal Street, Currawong Crescent, Osprey Avenue, Tern Street, Garnet Street, Ibis Street, Pelican Street, and Kingfisher Drive.
