Netball: Australia have taken out the last game of the Constellation Cup, despite going down in the series to the dominant Silver Ferns.
The Diamonds were dazzling in the final Test of the Constellation Cup as theyBut it was too little, too late for Stacey Marinkovich’s team as they coughed up the series with their three earlier record double digit losses .
“We talk about the unit work … that is important knowing each other, being able to almost have this intuition where each other is going to go,” ex-Diamonds defender Bianca Chatfield said. “It’s her footwork, it’s non stop,” Chatfield added. “She’s creating hesitation and doubt, and that’s helping Bruce to get to some balls.”
Recalled for game four, Moloney and Austin were the sparks for the Diamonds as they won back ball and chased down everything on offer. Add in the fact those three losses were blowouts of historic proportions for the Aussies and you could be forgiven for thinking the worst of the current state of Australian netball.A series loss coming after the highs of Commonwealth Games and then World Cup gold – where we farewelled the likes of Gretel Bueta, Ash Brazill and Steph Fretwell along the way – isn’t the end of the world.
Now, they are the toast of the netball world with their stunning three Test demolition of the Australian Diamonds. The Ferns weren’t just better than the Aussies in the first three Tests … they were so completely dominant in every facet of the game. What did we learn about New Zealand’s depth – particularly in attack? At this point, I’d say not a lot.
