AFL: David King has listed the 10 players in the competition that simply must be tagged, if their opposition is any chance of securing victory.
An explosive statistic from the season thus far has unveiled Collingwood as anything but, as concerns grow over the Magpies’ ability to defend their premiership triumph of yesteryear. The Pies scraped over the line against Hawthorn on Sunday at Adelaide Oval, and while it represented their second consecutive win, it also exposed valid concerns about their score sources and struggles transitioning the football.
Collingwood’s win over the Hawks at Gather Round and the week previous against Brisbane have the reigning premier placed at 2-3 and in 11th position as it heads into its first of two byes this season. New to Kayo? However, despite leading by as many as 38 points late in the second quarter on Sunday, the Pies made hard work of their eventual victory. “Collingwood were tipping over; they were completely out of petrol tickets,” Brisbane Lions legend Jonathan Brown told Fox Footy’s“I’m just not sure, the Collingwood game style has changed around. Last year, the dominance off half back was great to see, exciting football, scored more than anyone from the back half — they’ve lost their explosion.” Across the final pair of games that solidified their ‘23 flag win — the preliminary and grand finals — the Magpies posted 38 and 22 points from half-back, respectively, but have registered a 2024 average of just 12.5 per game thus far. “How many times have we seen it this year off half-back?” Brown asked the panel. “They had Nick Daicos and even Jeremy Howe launching off half-back and then being able to score, so, clearly, they’re trending down at the moment ... they’re definitely down.”“I definitely think they’re not connecting as well, especially that last kick inside forward-50,” former Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley concurred on Monday night. “Collingwood aren’t connecting quite as much, and that makes it a higher transitional game — the opposition gets a chance to rebound, and as soon as the game opens up a little bit, then you’re going to find even more mistakes, and you lose control of a contest. “I think — we saw Collingwood do it a little bit — but late in the games last year they’d go a little bit slower inside their 50, they’d be happy to go into congestion and then just hold in their front half. “But we loved them taking the game on ... I don’t think they’ve lost the initial dare, but they’re not winning those contests , they’re not winning as many of those.” Through five games in 2024, Collingwood has exited its back half 219 times for just nine goals, shining an unwanted spotlight on its stemmed offensive movement.“They hadn’t put the cue in the rack , but it looked like they were just sort of paddling a little bit, and then this happened, here. “If kicks the Maggies are 1-4 in their defence for the year.“Last year, if they’re three goals down in the last quarter, they can kick five from the back half in the last quarter . That’s what they became. “219 times for nine goals? Execution, dare, opposition, taking away corridor, all that sort of stuff — it all gets thrown in the melting pot. So, you’ve got to reinvent yourself a bit — or do you stick at it?”“And if you can’t find the corridor, then you’ve got to find an extra number on the outside and take those yards, or kick long to contests and speed up off that — which we saw a little bit more against Brisbane in their win two weeks ago.”Buckley added that while the Pies possess enough assets to cultivate another winning formula this year, the very easily could have fallen to Hawthorn. “I believe there’s enough talent in that side , that game would’ve shocked the coaching staff of Collingwood and the playing group,” he said. “Because they could’ve easily lost — that was out of their control. The opposition had a chance to win it, and Collingwood allowed the opposition to get in a to win it, and when you’ve won a game that way, it gives you pause for thought.
