Coal pits could become 'picturesque lakes' in ' fascinating' new water storage plan | Sky News AustraliaCoal mine sites could be utilised and converted to vast “water storage” systems and “picturesque lakes” to help solve the nation’s ‘water security issue,’ according to Hunter Valley Lakes Corporation Director Greg Story. \n\nReports emerged on Monday the Berejiklian government is considering plans to flood Hunter Valley coal mines in an attempt to deal with the state’s water storage problems. \n\n“Instead of backfilling these voids… we leave them open and we fill them with water,” Mr Story told Sky News. \n\n“The water will come from natural rainfall… it doesn’t impact on the Hunter River Scheme at all”. \n\nThe proposal would be mirrored on the Lusatian Lake District in Berlin, Germany, which provides both drinking water and recreational activities to residents via artificial lakes. \n\nMr Story said currently “there are the obvious questions” in relation to the proposition, including considerations where the water will come from if the drought continues and if there is the possibility of water contamination in the future. \n\nSky News host Chris Smith described the proposition as a “fascinating concept”. \n\nImage: Getty
