Coal mine sites could be utilised and converted to vast “water storage” systems and “picturesque lakes” to help solve the nation’s ‘water security issue,’ according to Hunter Valley Lakes Corporation Director Greg Story.

Reports emerged on Monday the Berejiklian government is considering plans to flood Hunter Valley coal mines in an attempt to deal with the state’s water storage problems. “Instead of backfilling these voids… we leave them open and we fill them with water,” Mr Story told Sky News. “The water will come from natural rainfall… it doesn’t impact on the Hunter River Scheme at all”.
