10 essential tracks to listen to from Muscle Shoals’ greatest drummer for your Sunday night 🎤
The Swampers’ simpatico, malleable country-funk made them music’s hit-making secret sauce, in the mid ‘60s at FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals for producer Rick Hall, and then their own studio Muscle Shoals Sound in Sheffield, after seceding from Hall in 1969.at the age of 75 after an extend illness brought on by myriad health problems, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease .
With the anniversary of Hawkins’ death approaching, a tribute for Hawkins is set for 7 p.m. April 16 at Shoals Community Theatre, address 123 N. Seminary St. in Florence. Those slated to perform including Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit drummer Chad Gamble and bassist Jimbo Hart, Swampers bassist David Hood, Shoals Sisters vocalists Marie Tomlinson Lewey, Cindy Walker and Carla Russell, rock band The Fiddleworms, guitarist Travis Wammack and many others.
In advance of Saturday’s tribute, dubbed “Remembering A Legend: Roger Hawkins,” I put together a list of 10 essential tracks by Hawkins. One could compile a much longer list, of course. But these recordings are a good place to start. Also, for this list, I limited the selections to one track by an artist, so while there are many Aretha and Pickett songs you could pick, for the sake of breadth, kept it to one track each.
These songs are full of groove, emotion, creativity and selflessness. In other words, Roger Hawkins played on them.After cutting his drum track for Franklin’s sassy Otis Redding cover “Respect,” Hawkins sat in a chair and watched Aretha and her sisters overdub the song’s “sock it to me” backing vocals. “At the time I thought, ‘This is really cooking,’” Hawkins told me in 2019. “I never realized what kind of history was being made, but I knew that I liked it a lot.
