Arisa Trew has won Olympic gold for Australia at the age of 14 with victory in the women’s skateboard park final at La Concorde

In May, Trew continued her trajectory by becoming the first woman to land a 900, two and a half rotations.

On Tuesday, in the late afternoon sun at the iconic Place de la Concorde in central Paris, Trew continued her history-making streak. In the women’s park event, Trew became the first Australian woman to win an Olympic skateboarding gold medal – joining compatriot Keegan Palmer, who won gold in Tokyo and will defend his men’s crown on Wednesday. She won ahead of Japan’s Cocona Hiraki, who collected silver, and Sky Brown of Team GB in the bronze medal position.

After coming unstuck on her first run, a strong showing on her second – starting with a big 540 – moved Trew into the medal placings. By the end of the field’s second runs, the Australian was in the bronze medal position. It all came down to the third run, and Trew held nothing back. Opening back to back 540s were followed by a clean, stylish run to elevate the Australian into first with a score of 93.18. Trew endured a nervous wait as the five remaining skaters had their runs, but no-one could match Trew’s theatrics on the skateboard.

The 14-year-old had entered the Olympics in strong form, winning qualifying events in Shanghai and Budapest. Following a shaky performance in the preliminaries, which saw Trew progress to the final ranked sixth of eight, her qualifying form returned in the final run. She is the first woman to land a 720, the first woman to land a 900, and now the second woman and first Australian to be a park skateboarding Olympic champion.
