AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan has confirmed the AFL grand final will be held at the Gabba in Brisbane, the first time the match has been held away from the MCG since 1991
The exact starting time for the match is yet to be locked in however McLachlan indicated it will likely start after 7pm Victorian time with the decision to be made in consultation with the broadcasters, venue management and other relevant parties.
"The impacts of this pandemic … has meant we've had to take the game away from its home, the MCG, for one year." “It’s not something we’re contemplating, but its incumbent on us to have that plan,” he said, adding the capacity at the Adelaide Oval would also be about 30,000.McLachlan said West Australian football fans would understand the difficulty of players playing a grand final after enduring a “hard” lockdown of at least seven days.McLachlan said the WA government remained "unapologetic" about its harsh policy and could not commit to allowing the full 60,000 capacity at Optus stadium.
