Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has addressed the Jobs and Skills Summit, saying compromises will need to be negotiated and sacrifices will need to be made.

“Of course, I don’t expect us to solve every problem and fix every issue before tomorrow afternoon, nor do I imagine everyone will be happy with every outcome,” Mr Albanese said.

“If we can get it right, if we can seek out the points of consensus rather than reasons for disagreement, the results will certainly be worth it.”

Mr O'Neal briefly joined the Prime Minister on Saturday at a media conference following a meeting, which Mr Albanese said was the basketball player's idea. However, his appearance sparked backlash from Greens Senator Lidia Thorpe and CLP Senator Jacinta Price, who have questioned his relevance to the issue. “The fact is that Shaq’s appearance meant that people are talking about it,” Mr Albanese said. “And one of the things we need to do is to raise awareness in the community that this referendum is coming, that there is a need for debate around it.”
