Australia has seized control of a prime Canberra site allocated to Russia for a new embassy amid fears the Kremlin had sought to bring in spies to work on the building and speculation Moscow had run out of money to finish the project.

National Capitol Authority Chief Executive Sally Barnes says the Russian Federation acknowledges they are in breach of their lease and were unable to provide an indication of a completion date or a commitment of funding towards the new embassy.

“When we spoke to the Russian representatives, they were disappointed, but they understood and, as I say, they acknowledge they breached the lease,” Ms Barnes told Sky News Australia.
